The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is preparing to launch the Ginhawa Solar Energy Loan (GSEL), a financing program designed to help government employees invest in solar panel systems for their homes.

Borrowers can secure loans of up to P500,000, with a low annual interest rate of 5%, payable over five years in 60 equal monthly installments and no service fee. This green loan initiative aligns with the national government’s energy conservation goals, aiming to ease the impact of rising electricity costs driven by global oil price increases., solar panel systems financed through GSEL will be covered by free insurance for three years, protecting against fire, earthquake, lightning, and typhoon damage.

The GSIS Board of Trustees has P12.5 billion for the program and P60 million for insurance coverage, with applications managed through the GSIS Touch mobile app. This allows members to conveniently upload necessary documents like supplier quotations and installation contracts for reimbursement. Government workers who use the loan can also benefit from the government’s net metering system, which permits households to sell excess electricity back to the grid, further cutting costs. GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso highlighted that the program provides a practical way to combat rising energy prices by enabling members to generate savings on electricity bills while repaying the loan at a competitive rate. The program will initially run for three years, after its effectiveness will be reviewed for possible extension. Eligible borrowers include active GSIS members with at least three years of government service. Further details will be announced soon.
